Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra brought the Terem Quartet to the summer concert in Munich’s Odeonsplatz, which was attended by over 6000 people. But it wasn’t the first time the Terem Quartet was on stage at a large-scale event. The Terem Quartet was a main attraction at the Olympic Games opening ceremonies in Barcelona, Vancouver, and Sochi, and also for 120,000 audience members in St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

But the “the third landmark of St. Petersburg, after the Hermitage and the Marinsky Theater” has also been a staple at WOMAD since 1992. Pop-rock star Peter Gabriel invited them, revealing himself to be a big fan. And if the quartet – which has very little contact with jazz – amazes even the legendary Michel Légrand, then we are talking about a real phenomenon.

The Terem Quartet recently played as part of the ARD Radio Drama Days (ARD-Hörspieltagen) in Karlsruhe as well as at two concerts of the Philharmonie Luxembourg on 28th and 29th January. A live recording by ARD/ARTE demonstrates best what Peter Gabriel means when he refers to “Teremism.” It’s his way of describing what the Terem Quartet achieves when they make music, and how.
